My experience here has shown me a new way of looking at my education. I have gotten to see the perspective of a teacher, which I think will make me a better student. I now know how hard it is for a teacher to take control of a classroom and try to teach when some kids are being a bit wild. I will now try to help the teacher and not contribute to the distractions, which will help me focus more on getting my work done instead of goofing around.

I haven't really been faced with any challenges or setbacks, nor have I seen my mentor struggling.
I commented on Aaron, Carmen, and Clarisa's blogs. The thing we all have in common is that we are all in a way helping other people. We have all learned the dedication it takes to help customers, students, patients, and/or co-workers. The question I have for them is how they see themselves using the skills they gained in their everyday life or school.
Interning here at my middle school Memorial has helped me grow as a person because I have started to better understand the struggles of being a teacher, especially here in my neighborhood. There are kids who have outside problems that can prevent them from coming to school, students who get expelled from other schools come here, etc. This is sad because these students are smart. They're good kids that need school to help them grow as people and academically. Being here has made me want to possibly pursue a career in which I can help these students. I hope I can inspire the students I am working with to explore other high schools because most students don't really get out of this area. I specifically hope I see some, if not all, at HTH because I believe it is where they would be best prepared to go to college.
Teachers don't socialize that much because they don't have much time to do it. I personally don't really socialize with teachers other than Mr. Perez and Mr. Castillo. Apart from them, I socialize most with students as I try to get to know them better and they also get to know me better. There is not much collaboration between teachers here as there is at High Tech High, it doesn't really affect the school as they are not a project based learning school.
My project will be to help ASB plan, promote, and make events for their "No Name Calling Week" which will take place from the 17th through the 20th. I will be mainly teaching the ASB students how to make videos on windows movie maker. Some will do skits and others will do more simple text only videos based around No Name Calling Week that will air on the student run news show that week. This project will benefit the school because it promotes a safe place for everyone and it will bring together students as they try to create a no bullying environment in their school.
I believe it is the students who will benifit most from my internship here. I am teaching them a skill that they might need for a "global society" like it says on their mission statement. Editing is a helpful skill to have in this new age. Companies need advertising, Youtube is a big platform waiting for new creators, movies are still huge, etc.
Alberto Castillo is a 6th grade Math/Science teacher. He was my 7th grade English teacher. I have been going to his class 5th and 6th period as those are my prep periods. For todays blogpost I interviewed him about how he got into education/teaching. At age 18, after high school, Mr. Castillo went to city college. He had to quit school however because he had become a parent. He later joined the military in order to get better support, financially and medically, for his family. When in the military, he realized school was the most import thing you could ever do. It took him about 8 years to get his bachelors, but only 2 years to get his masters. As a result he started teaching in the military, he did so for 8 years. In the military, they had a program to help get teachers credentials where he spent about 1 ½ years doing so. When he retired from the military and finally wanted to teach at a school, he decided he wanted to teach at Memorial because it's in the area where he grew up. He has now been teaching here for 20 years.
I am most suprised about the robotics class. I find it very similar to HTH in a way. The students do a lot of problem solving and a good bit of them rely on themselves and peers rather than the teacher for help/constructive critisicm. I find this to be very suprising because this is a traditional school and it's cool to see them integrating a class like this that is for the most part a new way of teaching students. |
